MOUNT VERNON — Carl Franklin Spears, 71, lost his long and courageous battle with cancer on Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, at his home with his family at his side.

He was born Nov. 29, 1939, in Guysville to the late John and Freida (Westfall) Spears Sr. Carl joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1957 and was stationed in Hawaii and Okinawa. He was an avid Ohio State University and Cincinnati Reds fan. Carl loved all outdoor sports especially hunting, fishing, camping, golf and traveling in his motor home. For years he was an active horseman, showing and competing at area horse shows. Carl’s passion was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and he loved every single minute he had with them.

He is survived by his loving wife, Maudy (Van Dyck) Spears; his children, Carl Spears of Arizona, Sheila Spears of Utica, Glenn Spears of Florida, Sandy (Scott) Holmes of Arizona, Kim Hess of Mount Vernon, Greg (Brandy) Drabick of Mount Vernon and Nick (Robinne) Drabick of North Canton; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Wanda Marcowitz, Wandalee Bickelhaup, Audrey Fischer, Lucy Tittle and Jean Chapman.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, John Spears Jr.

Friends may call Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, where a service will be held at 7 p.m. with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council. The family will observe a private graveside service at a later date.
