MOUNT VERNON — Charles N. Gallagher, 86, of South Edgewood Road, Mount Vernon, passed away Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born March 23, 1925, in Knox County to the late Thurman and Nina (Price) Gallagher. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Normandy. Charles retired after 31 years of employment with the city of Mount Vernon. He enjoyed playing softball and sang Christian gospel for the Landmarks and Lordsman. He was a faithful member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Brooks) Gallagher; a son, Charles (JoAnn) Gallagher II of Florida; two daughters, Sharon (John) Booth of Mount Vernon and Patricia (Paul) Jager of Michigan; stepchildren, Sam (Becky) Collins, Nona (Dale) Whipple, Letha (Don) Cook, Twyla Collins and Kathy (Richard) McKinley; a foster daughter, Loretta Ellison; 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ann (Hauger) Gallagher; three brothers, Ralph Gallagher, J. Lewis Gallagher and Glenn Gallagher; and a sister, Florence Wright.

Friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene, where friends may call one hour prior. The Revs. Russell Downs and Jack Christner will be officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
