MOUNT VERNON — Neva Porterfield Elson, 93, of Mount Vernon, passed away Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at the Ohio Eastern Star Home.
She was born Feb. 1, 1918, in Knox County to the late Clyde and Beatrice (Beach) Taylor of Bladensburg. Neva was a member of the Grove Church of Christ. She was also a member of the Ohio Eastern Star since 1939. Neva was a past worthy matron for the Glenwood Chapter 303 in Bladensburg. She was an avid Bridge player and a member of the Mount Vernon Duplicate Bridge Group for 20 years. Neva enjoyed her volunteer work throughout her life, volunteering for Knox Community Hospital from 1982-2003, the Red Cross and the Ohio Eastern Star Home. She was a graduate of Bladensburg High School, receiving her 12th year of education at Martinsburg High School.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Mervin Mast of Mount Gilead; her son, Mike Porterfield of Concord Township, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Neva was preceded in death by her first husband, Gail W. Porterfield; her second husband, Gerry Elson; a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Don Meckstroth; a son, Stephen “Steve” Porterfield; brother, Dwight Taylor; and a sister, Helen Clutter.
Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens with Pastor Don Linn officiating. The Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home in Mount Vernon is handling the funeral arrangements for the Elson family.
