SHELBY — John R. Russell, 78, resident of Shelby, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at his home.

Born Oct. 7, 1932, to James and Josephine (Hogue) Russell, he had been a Shelby resident for most of his life. A 1950 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School, he served in the U.S. Army and received his degree in accounting from Tri-State University in Indiana. John retired from Hi-Lo Trailer Co. as executive vice president in 1998 following 32 years of service.

In his spare time he enjoyed pitching horse shoes, family get-togethers, fishing and gardening. John was a very honest, humble, and generous man also known for being intelligent and funny.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce M. (Spangler) Russell, whom he married July 18, 1959; three daughters, Deanne Brokaw (Brett Heffner) of Shelby, Lynne (Barry) Argo of Shelby and Stephanie (Aaron) Hansen of Shelby; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Janet (Larry) Fulk of Mount Vernon; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Patrick Russell; and one sister, Mary Ann Dinnwiddie.

Funeral services will be held today, Aug. 13, 2011, at 12:30 p.m. at the Barkdull Funeral Home. Deacon Steve Keller will officiate with interment in Most Pure Heart of Mary Cemetery.
