COLUMBUS — Lawrence Truman “Larry” Conkling, 81, of Columbus, was called to be with God, on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011.
He was born and raised in Mount Vernon, where he graduated high school, and performed in Operettas, as well as the Marching Band, and later attended Olivet College in Illinois. He resided in Bradenton, Fla., from 1984-2010 and he received his BA in Social Work from Manatee College. Owner of Larry’s Heating and Cooling in Columbus and Manatee Air in Bradenton, he also taught heating and cooling at Columbus State and elsewhere; retiring in 1989. A lover of music, Larry directed and sang in numerous choirs, where his beautiful tenor voice was enjoyed.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Wayne Conkling; mother, Golda Lenore (Wise) Conkling Porter; and son, Marcus Conkling.
He is survived by his sister, Donna (Tom) Brown; children, Larry Conkling, Molly (Ralph) Aisel, Lance (Karen Storey) Conkling, Tricia Serrott, Connie Gruenler, Carol (Bill) Swisher and Greg Conkling. Also survived by 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two nieces.
A memorial service will be Saturday, Aug. 27, at 10:45 a.m., at the Mound View Cemetery, 307 Wooster Road, Mount Vernon.
