MOUNT VERNON — Ethel M. (nee Cole) Behner, 90, of Mount Vernon, died peacefully on Aug. 29, 2011.
She was born April 4, 1921, in Lima, Peru. Beloved wife of Russell Behner, beloved mother of Marjorie Behner-Sands of Westmont, Ill., Kathleen (Dr. David Powell) Behner of Chicago and Howard Behner of Howard. Dearest grandmother of Lindsey and Cassandra Sands.
Ethel was a treasured sister and “soul mate” of Adda (Edward) Sheldon of LaMesa, Calif. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mildred (Robert) Reiger; and her brother, Vernon (Barbara) Cole. Ethel was also a cherished sister-in-law, aunt and friend to many.
Ethel graduated from Mount Vernon Academy where she met her future husband, Russell. She attended Pacific Union College in Angwin, Calif., and after a brief time working as a secretary in New York City during World War II, she married Russell in 1947 and moved from New York City to LaGrange, Ohio, where Russell had a farm and where she started her family.
Ethel loved life but most of all she loved her family and led by example in instilling respect for her immediate family as well as her extended family. She never turned down an opportunity to remind her husband, her children, her granddaughters and her extended family just how special they were to her.
Friends may call Friday from 10 a.m. to noon at Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home, 212 N. Main St., Mount Vernon, where funeral services will follow calling hours at noon with Pastor Russell Lucht officiating. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
