MOUNT VERNON — Bernice U. Williams, 94, of Mount Vernon, passed away Sunday morning, Sept. 4, 2011, at Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.

She was born July 12, 1917, in Conneaut, Ohio, daughter of the late Sylvester and Effie (Smith) Usher. Bernice worked at the Bron-Shoe Company in Columbus for 35 years and at retirement she was the secretary to the president of the company. She was a Methodist by faith. Bernice enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, and the family pets. She also enjoyed the outdoors, especially flower and vegetable gardening.

Bernice is survived by her son, Roger U. Williams of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Shelly S. Legg of Mount Vernon, Shawn G. Williams of Marion, Scott U. (Danielle) Williams of Delta and Stephen A. Williams of Fredericktown; great-grandchildren, Preston Williams, Liana Legg, Veronica Scott, Tiffanie Scott, Shyanne Hager, Lance Williams and Tristen Williams; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Tim and Edith Miller, Alisha Miller, Salena Groves, Roger Legg and Brandon Ketter; and caregivers, Estella Matheny, Leota Mercer and Mary McCloy.

In addition to her parents, Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Gideon H. Williams, in 1979; great-grandchildren, Emily and Sidney Legg; a sister, Mary U. Reed; and brothers, Gordon, Paul, Arthur, Harold and Howard.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Sept. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, where a funeral service will be held Thursday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jerry Bell officiating. A committal service will be held at 1:30 p.m. in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Columbus.
