MOUNT VERNON — Nanette C. Moder-Van Houten, 42, of Mount Vernon, passed away Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, after a long-fought battle with juvenile diabetes since the age of 4, at the Whispering Hills Nursing Home.

She was born May 13, 1969, in Columbus to Norman Moder and Mary (Wigal) Shaffer. Nanette was a 1987 graduate from Mount Vernon High School after 11 1/2 years in the Centerburg Schools. She was employed as a server, home health aide, N.H.I, Kents Kones and an office cleaner. She was a hard worker. Nanette was known as a fighter. Her doctor’s would compliment her courage during her hard battle with juvenile diabetes. She was also known as a talker. The doctor’s would tell Nanette’s family if her mouth was moving she was getting better. Even through all of her hardships, Nanette always had a smile on her face and love in her heart.

She is survived by her daughter, Brittania “Britt” Rena Moder of Butler; her son, Geoffrey Thomas Moder of Butler; her mother, Mary Shaffer of Butler; her father, Norman D. Moder of Texas; her stepgrandmother, Cora Vannoy Wigal of Parkersburg, W.Va.; her paternal grandfather, Norman O. Moder; her grandmother, Jane Apt of Columbus; and her husband, Roy Van Houten.

Nanette was preceded in death by her brother, Jeoffrey Moder; her grandparents, Herbert and Clara Wigal; and her great-grandmother, Mary Moder.

Friends may call Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home with the service to follow beginning at 6 p.m. with the Rev. Jerry Bell officiating. The family will observe a private graveside service at a later date.

Memorial contributions can be made to the family to defer funeral costs.
