GAMBIER — Joan Newton, 81, of Gambier, passed away at home with family on Tuesday morning, Sept. 27, 2011.

She was born Feb. 10, 1930, in Mount Vernon, daughter of the late Dale and Marie (Welch) Frey. Joan graduated from the former St. Vincent de Paul High School and was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and her friends.

Joan is survived by her children, Jeffrey (Robin Wheatley) Newton of Cambridge, Mass., Marsha (Mark) Phillips of Mount Vernon, Stephen Newton of Powell, Richard Lee (Elizabeth) Newton of Huron, Timothy Allan Newton of Mount Vernon and Thomas Patrick (Karen) Newton of Lorain; grandchildren, Shawn William Phillips, Michael Newton Phillips, Stephen Newton Phillips, Stephanie Marie Newton, Cheri Leigh Newton Rine, Reuben James Newton, Laura Christina Newton, Kathryn Marie Newton and Kimberly Elise Newton; and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence L. Newton; and a sister, Jean Snyder.

The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 30, from 6 p.m. until the time of a memorial service honoring the life of Joan at 7 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon. The Rev. Father Mark J. Hammond will preside.
