PARMA — Joan Marie Miller, 57, of Parma, formerly of Mount Vernon, passed away Oct. 5, 2011, after a courageous battle with malignant melanoma.

Joan graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1971, and then went on to complete an Associate’s Degree in Medical Assistance from Hocking Technical College, a Bachelor’s Degree from CSU in Communications, later finishing her Master’s Degree from John Carroll University in Counseling and Human Services.

She has been employed by Fed Ex since 1987 starting as a courier and then a customer service agent. Joan belonged to St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Parma and was an active member of the Humane Society and the ASPCA.

Joan is survived by her mother, Frances Miller; three brothers, Paul, Karl and Eugene; many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. She leaves behind many friends, including two close friends, Donna Greenlee-Ciechanowicz and Trudy DeSantis.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Miller; two infant brothers; and her brother, Gregory, who died at the age of 24.

A memorial mass to celebrate the life of Joan will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Mark J. Hammond as celebrant. Private burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home in Mount Vernon is handling the funeral arrangements for the Miller family.
