MOUNT VERNON — Roger L. Carter, 74, of Mount Vernon, passed away Oct. 4, 2011, at Whispering Hills Care Center.

He was born Oct. 24, 1936, in Rarden to the late Leroy and Sadie (Mustard) Carter. Roger was a member of the Eastside Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Phyllis Adkins-Carter; a son, Roger J. (Brenda) Carter of Conway, S.C.; daughter, Marsha (Eddy) Shephard of Lucusville; five stepchildren, Ron Adkins of Newark, Christine (Jeff) O’Dell of Ridgely, Tenn., Brian Adkins of Columbus, Miss., Gayle (Paul) O’Dell of Mount Vernon and Darren (Loretta) Adkins of Lexington; a brother, Tom (Sharon) Carter of Seaman; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Roger was preceded in death by his first wife, Stella Ann Carter; and a stepdaughter, Tammy McClelland.

Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home, 212 N. Main St., Mount Vernon, where funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. with Minister Rick Tincher officiating. Burial will be in Mustard Cemetery in Rarden on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
