BELLVILLE — Ask John McGugin what he was most proud of and without hesitation he would confidently state, “God’s faithful guidance and blessing on my family.” John could honestly say that all of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are Christians, saved by God’s loving grace. Leading by example John was a faithful and humble servant of the Lord who was committed to Christ and his family. On Thursday morning, Oct. 20, 2011, at the age of 90, God’s promises held true and John J. McGugin was welcomed home to his loving savior, Jesus Christ.

On April 27, 1921, he was born in Mount Vernon to John W. and Retta M. (White) McGugin.

As a young man, John was Louis Bromfield’s second employee, hired mainly as a farm hand, but when Louis was away from the farm, it was John who watched over his property. While working for the Bromfields John first met a beautiful young woman, Florence Irene Hout. On New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, 1942, John and Florence married and together they made their home in the Mansfield and Bellville areas, raising their two children.

John worked at Tappan for 40 years retiring in 1980. John was also a member of the Tappan retiree club for over 25 years.

John and Florence enjoyed wintering in Florida. Together they would take meticulous care of their garden.

A member of First Alliance Church in Mansfield John once was a member of Keenagers.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dean Shira of Fredericktown; son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Carolyn McGugin of Bellville; five grandchildren and their spouses, Tami and Joe Vaughn, Lori and Wid Shipley, Staci and Tom Matthews, Kenny Shira, and Aimee and Aaron Ford; eight great-grandchildren, Cassandra, Hannah, Jamison, Mason, Drezden, Jusden, Ainsley and Addison; sister-in-law, Marjorie Bisel of Bellville; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Florence; brother, Carold McGugin; sister, Leona Phillips; brother, Harold McGugin; and sister, Doris Winters.

The McGugin Family will receive friends Sunday, Oct. 23, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown. Pastor Brent Ford will officiate.

Memorial contributions in John’s memory to Home Health Care Hospice of Galion may be made at the funeral home.
