FREDERICKTOWN — Jean M. Updike, 89, of Fredericktown, passed away Thursday afternoon, Oct. 27, 2011, at the Ohio State University Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 7, 1922, in Cleveland, daughter of the late Elmer and Rita (Kanaga) Hoffman. Jean was a 1942 graduate of Fredericktown High School. She attended the First Presbyterian Church in Fredericktown and was later baptized and a member of the Ankenytown Grace Brethren Church. Jean was employed by Shellmar Industries as an administrative assistant and after marriage was a devoted mother, housewife and grandmother.

Jean is survived by her son, Thomas H. Updike of Fredericktown; a daughter, Jean C. (William) FitzGerald of Avon Lake; grandchildren, Alexa and Austin Updike; nieces, nephews, and several great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas T. Updike; and a sister, Rita St. Clair.

The family will receive friends today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, 33 E. College St., Fredericktown. A private inurnment will be in Ankenytown Cemetery.
