COLUMBIA, S.C. — Genola Irene (Huston) Carpenter, 94, of Columbia, S.C., and formerly of West Lafayette, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011.

Born July 25, 1917, in West Lafayette, she was the daughter of the late William Charles and Mary Elizabeth (Adams) Huston. On Feb. 19, 1936, she married John L. Carpenter who preceded her in death on Aug. 21, 1975. Genola was the last Charter member of the West Lafayette Church of the Nazarene and a lifetime member. She loved her church, traveling, jigsaw puzzles and playing Scrabble. She and her late husband were caretakers of the Nazarene Campgrounds in Columbus, Ohio, until 1975.

Surviving family members are a son, Jack (Pat) Carpenter; daughter, Thelma C. (Steve) Moffett; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one stepgrandson; four stepgreat-grandchildren; sister, Harvilla Wells of Newark, Ohio; numerous nieces, nephews; and her last surviving cousin, Doris Mae Colton.

Genola was preceded in death by daughter, Sarah Jane Earles; granddaughter, Carole Everhart; four brothers, Ernest Adams, Frank Huston, Paul Huston and Hubert Huston; and half siblings, Lillian Underwood, Leah Tice, Mary and Alvin Huston.

A celebration of her life will be held Thursday, Nov. 3, at 10 a.m. at the Free Funeral Home, Coshocton, Ohio, with grandson the Rev. Berry Whitt and son-in-law Chaplain LTC Gerald Earles (USA Ret) officiating. Interment will follow at Fairfield Cemetery, West Lafayette. Relatives and friends will be received Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Free Funeral Home.
