MOUNT VERNON — Frank R. Ballengee, age 76, of Miller Avenue, Mount Vernon, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Aug. 29, 1935, in Charleston, W.Va., to the late Dennis Eldridge and Thelma (Hammonds) Ballengee. Frank served in the U.S. Air Force and retired from the U.S. Army. He worked for the City of Mount Vernon. Frank enjoyed hunting and listening to his “Old” country music. He was a member of AMVETS Post 95 in Mount Vernon.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Austin) Ballengee; a son, Dennis A. Ballengee of Mount Vernon; a daughter, Joy Anne Walters of Mount Vernon; his stepchildren, Gregg Stricker of Mount Vernon, Jeff Stricker of Salt Lake City, Utah, Steve Stricker of Mount Vernon and Jill Henwood of Amity; six grandchildren, Christopher Walters, Carolyn Walters, Samantha Walters, Brandy Ballengee, Steven Cockerham and Christina Taylor; four great-grandchildren, Tragon, Landon, Justin and Sophia; two brothers, Dennis Eugene (Karen) Ballengee of Mount Vernon, Robert (Debra) Ballengee of Mount Vernon; and a sister, Shirley Head of Gallaway.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Nedra Kemper; second wife, Betty Lou (Robbins) Ballengee; a daughter, Sharon Hatch; and a sister, Margaret Nelson.
Friends may call Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, where a funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. Pastor William Fennell will be officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow in Mound View Cemetery.
