MOUNT VERNON — Josephine Gray, 84, of Yauger Road, Mount Vernon, passed away Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, at the Country Court Nursing Center.
She was born July 15, 1927, in Middleport, Ohio, to the late Russell and Delia (Taylor) Mayes. Josephine was the secretary/bookkeeper for Bennet Distribution in Marengo, a clerk for the Marengo Post Office and also a clerk for the Interchurch of Mount Vernon. She was a member of Marengo United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for 40 years. She had been a member of the First Church of the Nazarene since 1996. She also taught Bible study at Beech Tree Apartments. Josephine loved to study and read the Bible and Christian books. She loved her special memories of raising her children, living on her farm, and taking her Bible to the stream and meditating.
She is survived by her sons, James (Betty) Gray of Marengo, Kenneth (Dawn Pfeiffer) Gray of Marion, Robert (Shirley) Gray of Mount Vernon; seven grandchildren, James Gray Jr., Jenifer Mosher, Kenneth Gray II, Jason Gray, Kyle Gray, Karri Gray and Brian Gray; and eight great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, Josephine was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth James Gray; a daughter, Janet Lane; four brothers, Vernon, Harold, Russell and Lowell Mayes; and her sister ,Dorothy Price.
Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon; and one hour prior to the service on Thursday. A funeral service will be held Thursday beginning at 11 a.m. at the Marengo United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Marengo Cemetery.
