MOUNT VERNON — Joan E. Smithhisler, 82, of Mount Vernon, died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011, at the Country Club Retirement Campus in Mount Vernon.

Joan was born Sept. 17, 1929, in Mount Vernon, to John and Ina (Weary) Bowden and had spent her lifetime in the Knox County area. Joan was a member of the North Liberty United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her children, Michael (Caroline) Smithhisler, Troy Smithhisler, Susan (Mike) Vilfer and Karen (David) Tedrow, all of Mount Vernon; 12 grandchildren, Jonas Smithhisler, Hali Smithhisler, Jason Smith, Ryan Cline, Ashley Neer, Michaela Cline, Aaron Tedrow, Lindsay Massa, Jennifer Flynn, Deborah Deboard, Michael Vilfer and Malorie Vilfer; 12 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Teresa Jeannine Smithhisler of Mount Vernon.

Besides her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Smithhisler, in 2010; two grandsons, Chad Smithhisler and Adam Tedrow; five brothers, John Bowden, George Bowden, Raymond Bowden, Billy Bowden and Wayne Bowden; and three sisters, Donna Jean Frost, Eleanor Styers and Marjorie Tyson.

There will be no calling hours. Graveside funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Mound View Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Lucian Baker officiating.
