MOUNT VERNON - Major David L. Hathorn, 64, of Rose Avenue, Mount Vernon, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.
He was born Nov. 5, 1947, in Zanesville to the late Brigadier William and Leota (Brown) Hathorn. David retired in 2008 after 42 years of service with The Salvation Army. He was a soldier of the Mount Vernon Salvation Army, where he was a song leader, played trombone in The Salvation Army Band, and led a weekly Bible study. David was a member of The Salvation Army Men’s Club and currently served as a vice president of the Peniel Holiness Association. David served in the aftermath of 9/11 in New York and was a proud American.
He is survived by his wife, Alice (Ball) Hathorn; two daughters, Margaret (Joseph) Henning of New Castle, Pa., Carolyn (Peter) Callaghan of Edgewater Park, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; three brothers, Robert Hathorn of Denison, Ohio, Richard Hathorn of Atlanta, Ga., William Hathorn of Nampa, Idaho; and a sister, Eva Geddes of Suffern, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 2, starting at 2 p.m. at The Salvation Army Church, 206 E. Ohio Ave., Mount Vernon. Friends may call two hours prior. Major Wesley Geddes, Major Eva Geddes and Major Dean Satterlee will be officiating. The family will observe a private graveside service.
