MOUNT VERNON — Ernest D. Calkins, 62, of Johnstown Road, Mount Vernon, passed away Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011, at The Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus.
He was born April 29, 1949, in Mount Vernon to the late Roger and Dorothy (Horn) Calkins. Ernest was employed and retired from TRW after 29 years of service. Ernest enjoyed trout fishing, hunting, tying flies, attending ballgames and playing horseshoes. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Ernest was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
He is survived by his son, John Calkins of Mount Vernon; two daughters, Rita (Mark) Heaton of Sunbury, Ali (Kevin Cox) Lowe of Mount Vernon; five grandchildren, Taylor Lowe, Kiley Lowe, John Lowe IV, Zain Heaton, Rhea Heaton; three brothers, Larry (Amy) Calkins of Mount Vernon, Doug (Kathy) Calkins of Mount Vernon, Gary Calkins of Mount Vernon; a sister, Kim (Jeff Casey) Calkins of Newark; the mother of his children, Tina K. Calkins; and special friends, Kimberly and Amanda Hagans.
Besides his parents, Ernest was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Lane.
Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home. A service will be held Friday beginning at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Wade Wolf officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
