LOUDONVILLE — James Frank Smithhisler, 94, of State Route 60, Loudonville, died late Sunday evening, Dec. 4, 2011, in Samaritan Regional Health System following a brief illness.

Mr. Smithhisler was born Oct. 29, 1917, in Greer and was the son of the late J. Walter and Martha (Frank) Smithhisler. Mr. Smithhisler had lived in the Loudonville area since age 6 and was a 1936 graduate of Loudonville High School. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was the retired custodian of the Loudonville Post Office and was a retired bus driver for the Loudonville-Perrysville Schools. He had farmed all of his life and his first job after high school was working at the Loudonville Milling Co. and later working for Strang Implement. For a short period of time, he was also a rural mail carrier. Mr. Smithhisler was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, and American Legion Post 257. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

On July 1, 1961, he married Elizabeth “Betty” Cromi, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 29, 1996.

He is survived by one daughter, Sandra A. Norman of Boynton Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, Renee Norman of Maryland, Denise Roland of Fairview Park, and David (Yvette) Norman of Maryland; five great-grandchildren, Sarah Norman, Kyle and Lennon Norman, and Thomas and James Roland; one great-great-granddaughter, Lillian Roland; and one sister, Nellie Florence Williams of Loudonville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one sister, Madeline Smithhisler in 2008.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. in Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home, Loudonville, with the Rev. Scott Henderson officiating. Burial will follow, with military honors conducted by the American Legion and VFW, in Loudonville Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
