PRATTVILLE, Ala. — Velma Talbott Matthews, 91, formerly of Mount Vernon, died Dec. 2, 2011, at her daughter’s home in Prattville, Ala.

She was born July 17, 1920, to Archie and Lucille Talbott and had been a lifetime resident of Ohio. She was formerly owner of Matthews Greenhouse in Gambier; but is better known as a quiet, unassuming and loving person who touched the lives of so many through her gentle warmth and beautiful hand work. She attended Berlin United Methodist Church and was a member of the Knox County Quilt Guild.

She is survived by two sons, James (Jill) Matthews of Maysville, Ga., and Douglas Matthews of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Patricia (Jerry) Boling of Prattville, Ala.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Matthews; her parents; four sisters; four brothers.

A memorial service to be held at Berlin United Methodist Church will be announced at a later date.
