ROSCOMMON, Mich. — Grace Evelyn North Carter was born 94 years ago near Mount Vernon, Ohio. Her parents were Perry “Max” North, a circuit minister with Native Americans, and Dora (Rehs) North. After her father’s death in Oklahoma she returned to Mount Vernon at age 16. She married her childhood sweetheart Ray Carter in Russell, Ky., on Oct. 19, 1940. They both worked at Shellmar Bettner which became Continental Can Company. Everyone who knew them loved them. Ray had built a cabin north of Mount Vernon and many people came to visit with them.

In 1959, they bought a resort at Houghton Lake, Mich., and called it Carter’s North 40 Resort. Many of their Ohio friends visited. The resort was such a huge success since they were good hosts. She and Ray were very close and happy until he died Aug. 15, 2002. They were always best friends. You could not find anyone with bad things to say about them.

In 1943, their daughter Joan was born. In 1963, their daughter Renae was born. They were wonderful parents. They idolized their grandson Kurt, who spent summers at the resort. When they retired from the resort they bought a lovely home near the Au Sable River in Roscommon, Mich. Family loved to gather there. When Ray became ill, and before he died, they moved to the Brook Retirement Community. This is a wonderful place and Grace lived there until her death Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011. Her faith was strong; “She had the faith of Job,” and she loved animals.

Throughout their life they enjoyed their children who survive them. Renae Carter, D.O., lives and works in the Corunna area. Joan Durling and grandson Kurt Durling both work for Mental Health in Corunna. She is also survived by Kurt’s wife Karen, and a great-grandson, Hayden, who reside in East Lansing, and dear friends, Cheyenne and Chessie. She was preceded in death by her husband; son-in-law, Keith Durling; and her parents.

Memorials would be appreciated to Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 149 W. Robinson Lake Road, Roscommon, MI 48653; or Shiawassee Humane Society, 2752 W. Bennington Road, Owosso, MI 48867.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 19, officiated by Rev. Eric D. Kieb at Walsh Funeral Home in Roscommon. Burial will be at Pioneer Cemetery, also in Roscommon.
