FREDERICKTOWN — Nick M. Gaumer, 16, of Fredericktown, passed away Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born on March 17, 1995, in Columbus, to Mike and Carrie (Gerrard) Gaumer. Nick was a junior at the Knox County Career Center where he served as an Ambassador and was the current President of the Sports Medicine and Exercise Science program. He also served as Flight Leader of his ROTC program and was a member of the Fredericktown United Methodist Church.

If you know Nick Gaumer, you know he was a runner. Nick was a three-time letter winner for Fredericktown High School cross country and a two-time state qualifier where he just finished in 88th place in the State of Ohio. He was a two-time varsity letter winner in track and currently tied for 13th place on the All Times Runner list at Fredericktown High School.

Nick was President of the Dream Catchers 4-H Club and just this year he started contest events at the Knox County Fair. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends and you could always catch Nick reading a good book. Like most kids his age, Nick enjoyed playing Madden Football on his PlayStation 3. His contagious smile and positive attitude will be missed by his family and many friends.

He is survived by his parents; his maternal grandparents, Janet Gerrard and Dale (Karen) Gerrard; great-grandmother, Rene Gerrard; brother-in-law, Adam Ernsberger; aunts and uncles, Phil (Mary Morningstar) Gerrard, Robin (Shawn) Gerrard McCabe, Rick (Connie) Gaumer, Steve Gaumer, Jeff (Karen) Gaumer, Brian Gaumer and Cathy (Jim) Denuit; a stepsister, Erin Reeves; canine companion, Blue; and equine companion, Daisy.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Ashlei Ernsberger; and paternal grandparents, Willard and Jeanne Gaumer.

Friends may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the R.R Hodges Chapel at the Mount Vernon Nazarene University where a funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. The family will observe a private graveside service in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fredericktown cross country team in care of the Fredericktown Athletic Boosters; or the Fredericktown EMS Association, 139 Columbus Road, Fredericktown, OH 43019 in Nick’s memory.
