MOUNT VERNON — Dr. Doyle E. Clay Sr. 92, of Mount Vernon, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.
Dr. Clay was born Jan. 17, 1919, in Mercer County, Ohio, to Orval and Jennie (Duff) Clay and had attended Capital University in Columbus. He was retired from the Nazarene Church, where he had served over 72 years as a minister at Medina, Newark, Circleville, Columbus and Fostoria; and District Superintendent for the North Central Ohio District of Nazarene Churches. He was a member of the Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene in Mount Vernon.
Surviving are his wife, LaVera W. (Replogle) Clay; sons and daughters-in-law, Doyle E. and Vickie Clay Jr. and Daniel Lee and Vicki Clay, all of Fostoria, Ohio; his daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl Jean and the Rev. Richard Gatlin of Rio Dell, Calif.; grandchildren, Wendy Gatlin, Joel Clay, Erik Gatlin, John (Kristy) Clay, Amy (David) Gatlin Goslaw, Jamie (Julie) Clay, Daniel (Sherri) Clay, David (Laura) Clay; great-grandchildren, Rachael, Cameron, Morgan, Ashley, Ryan, Josh, Rachel, Julia, Regan, Rebecca, Hope, Natalie, Luke, Lauren, Meredith, Justice.
Besides his parents, Dr. Clay was preceded in death by his son, William Curtis Clay; a great-grandson, James Daniel Clay; and brothers, Rev. William F. Clay, Rev. Russell V. Clay, Rev. Maurice Clay, Rev. Robert Clay, and Rev. Kenneth Clay; and his sister, Helen Welker.
Friends may call Wednesday, Dec. 28, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon. A service giving glory to God and celebrating the life of Dr. Doyle E. Clay Sr. will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene, 16001 Glen Road, Mount Vernon. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery in Mount Vernon.
