MOUNT VERNON — Stephen E. Swihart, 70, of Meadowbrook Drive, Mount Vernon, passed away Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital in Westerville.

He was born March 18, 1941, in Knox County to the late H. Orren and Helen (Shaffer) Swihart. Stephen served in the U.S Navy before retiring from the Ohio National Guard. He was employed at Jervis B. Webb in Mount Vernon for 15-plus years. Stephen was active in the Old Timers and church league softball and enjoyed cheering on the Yellow Jackets at Mount Vernon athletic contests.

He is survived by his wife, Linda (Barton) Swihart, whom he married Aug. 3, 1963; a daughter, Kristie (James Blubaugh) Swihart of Grandview; two grandchildren, Lindsey Swihart and Courtney Swihart; two brothers, David (Joyce) Swihart of Mount Vernon and Thomas Swihart of Mansfield; and a sister, Nancy (William) Stone of Henryville.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Amanda Swihart.

A funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, where friends may call two hours prior. Burial, with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Vernon Athletic Boosters or to a local charity of one’s choice.
