RALEIGH, N.C. — Madeleine Szymanski died surrounded by her family Dec. 22, 2011, at Duke Raleigh Hospital, Raleigh, N.C., after a short illness. She had been a resident of Alta Oakridge Independent Living for two years. Prior to that she lived in Naples, Fla., for 17 years.

Mrs. Szymanski was born March 26, 1922, to Charles and Harriet (Ladrier) Somes in Salina, Kan., moving to Vincennes, Ind., as a child. She married Robert N. Hill on Dec. 28, 1946. She and Bob moved to Mount Vernon in 1948.

She earned her B.A. in Education from Otterbein College in 1962 and taught school at Central, East, Pleasant Street Elementary and Mount Vernon Middle Schools until 1983. She had been a member of the Mount Vernon Garden Club, Psi Iota Xi Sorority, St. Vincent de Paul Church and the Mount Vernon Country Club. She was also a Girl Scout Brownie leader for many years. After moving to Naples, Fla., in 1992, she lived in Royal Wood and was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, DAR and The Shells.

She is survived by two daughters, Lesley Hill (Joe) White of Raleigh, N.C., and Cynthia Hill (Rod) Jahner of Wake Forest, N.C.; four grandchildren, Alison Brie White and Keely White (Andy) Deming, both of Charlotte, N.C., Kyle Robert Jahner of Raleigh, and Corey Joseph Jahner of Chicago, Ill; one great-granddaughter, Addison Brooke Deming of Charlotte, N.C.; and a sister, Anna Frances McAlister of Paducah, Ky. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, stepchildren and their families, including special stepdaughters, Ruthie Costello Johnson of Mount Vernon and Mary Margaret Costello McLernon of Charleston, S.C.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Jan. 7, at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Mount Vernon, to be followed by internment in Calvary Cemetery.
