ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Verna Allman (nee Jones), wife of Joseph W. Allman, M.D. (deceased), mother of Susan Allman Cook (deceased), Mary “Drew” Allman Van Doren (widow), survived by son-in-law, Dr. John (Beth) Cook; grandchildren, Dr. Daniel Cook, Shauna (Anthony) Steffee, Joshua (Nicole) Cook, Nathan Cook; great-grandchildren, Daniel, Evan and Jonathan Steffee, Kasia and Kiera Cook; sister-in-law, Evangeline Lambneck; and many greatly loved nieces and nephews, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, in Saint Louis County, Missouri, at age 99. Mrs. Allman left Mount Vernon in 1995 to live near her daughter, Drew. She succumbed to a relatively short bout of cancer. Throughout her old age she was surprisingly sharp of mind and looked younger than her years. This was perhaps attributable to her philosophy: “learn as much as you can every day.”
Mrs. Allman was born in Clarksburg, W.Va. She graduated from the Ohio State University with a BS in Music and English Education, taught for a short time, married Dr. Allman and left for WWII.
Mrs. Allman and her husband found a true home in Mount Vernon. Before his early death at 51, Dr. Allman gave great love, kindness, and care to the community through his work as an anesthesiologist and general practitioner. Mrs. Allman kept him going, arranged everything around his long hours, and never complained. She was President of Medical Auxiliary during the years he was Chief of Staff. She was involved in many community groups.
Mrs. Allman played difficult classical piano, made her own popular arrangements, loved good literature, liked to paint, and insisted on perfect grammar. She had some exciting experiences in Saint Louis despite mobility problems in her old age, but Mount Vernon was always home.
