MOUNT VERNON — Richard D. Simpson Sr., 83, of Sycamore Road, Mount Vernon, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, at Country Court Nursing Center in Mount Vernon. He was born Aug. 16, 1928, in Howard, to the late Harley and Lucy (Mavis) Simpson. Richard served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He belonged to the Ohio Draft Horse Association and showed locally at the Knox County Fair.

He is survived by his children, Donna Simpson of Mount Vernon, Richard (Connie) Simpson Jr. of Mount Vernon, John (Pam) Simpson of Utica and Regina Cotton of Mount Vernon; six grandchildren, Aaron Flecknoe, Adam Simpson, Joshua Simpson, Katelyn Simpson, Jessica Cotton and Camry Cotton; a great-granddaughter, Brianna Flecknoe; a brother, Harold Simpson; stepchildren, Bill (Eleanor) Ott Jr., Cheryl Mizer, Carolyn Ott, Dixie (Steve) Bemiller; and several stepgrandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Opal McMillan.

Friends may call Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home. The family will observe a private graveside service in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
