MOUNT VERNON — Bernice E. Jewell, 85, of Yauger Road, Mount Vernon, passed away Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, at the Country Court Care Center in Mount Vernon.

She was born Sept. 6, 1926, in Mount Heron, Va., to the late Lilburn and Maryann (Rowe) Keen. Bernice was a member of the First Christian Church of Mount Vernon, served as chaplain of the Mount Vernon DAVA and was a hospital volunteer in Kingman, Ariz. She loved music, quilting, and reading, but most of all she loved being with friends and family.

Bernice married Henry M. Jewell on March 29, 1946, in Grundy, Va. They moved to Mount Vernon in 1951. Bernice was a homemaker and also worked at Buckeye Mart. They moved to Kingman, Ariz., after Henry retired from the Penn Central Railroad and spent 15 happy years there. Bernice returned to Mount Vernon after her husband’s death.

She is survived by her two daughters, Anna Eggstaff of Mount Vernon, Barbara (Ron) Hules of Fredericktown; two grandchildren, Chris (Pam) Eggstaff and Emily Hules; a great-grandson, Joshua Eggstaff; and many nieces and nephews; special nieces and nephews, Judy McGlothlin Jamieson of White Hills, Ariz., Tim McGlothlin of Fredericktown and Cheryl Keen Tucker of Dalesville, Va.

Besides her parents, Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, who was the love of her life, Henry Jewell; a great-grandson Jacob Eggstaff; and two brothers, Emory McGlothlin and Elmer Keen.

The family of Bernice Jewell would like to thank Hospice and Country Court Staff for their loving care.

Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. The family will observe a private graveside service in Mound View Cemetery at a later date.
