MOUNT VERNON — Patty Maitland, born Nov. 20, 1934, passed away Jan. 20, 2012, after an unexpected massive stroke on Friday, Jan. 13, 2012. She was kindly cared for within our community by the staff at Knox Community Hospital’s Emergency Department prior to being transferred to Riverside Methodist Hospital, where she passed away after several days. Family and friends were with Patty during the course of the event.

She is survived by her daughter, Abby Underwood Maitland; stepsons, Tom Underwood and Steve Underwood; son-in-law, Peter Donadio; and brother, Thomas Maitland Jr. Additionally, she was the grandmother of Anna Maitland Donadio, Adam Maitland Donadio, Michael Underwood, Patrick Underwood, Dylan McCament, Jesse Underwood and Stephen Underwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Catheryn Maitland of Denison; sister, Mary Kay Dorgin of Coshocton; and husbands, Tom Underwood and Don Mynhier as well as her beloved son, David Underwood of Smyrna, Ga.

Patty was best known in the community as Poor Pitiful Patty and had her first antique store in Mount Vernon in the 1970s. She was partnered in the antique business with her daughter, Abby (known as The English Ladies) for over 25 years which included stores in Mount Vernon and Berlin, Ohio; and St. Augustine, Fla. In 2010, her booth at the Ohio State Fair’s Antique and Collectible Show won the honor of “Best Booth.” She was an invited speaker and exhibitor at the Ohio Historical Society and was the founding member of the Perry County Historical Society. As a young lady, she was a contestant in the Miss Ohio Pageant.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, 25 Church St., Bellville. A luncheon will follow. All who would like to attend are welcome.
