MOUNT VERNON — John Webster Conkle, 89, of Mount Vernon, passed away Jan. 29, 2012, at the Knox Community Hospital with his loving family by his side.
He was born Aug. 9, 1922, in Mount Vernon, to Edwin Webster Conkle and Francis Willard (Fawcett) Conkle. John was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church and a former member of the Zion Lutheran Church. He was a U.S. World War II Navy veteran. He retired in 1984 as a machinist with the Continental Can Co.
John is survived by his wife of 65 years, Isabelle (Swendal) Conkle; three daughters, Linda and Nancy Conkle, both of the home, and Judy (Ralph) Frazee of Mount Vernon; three grandchildren, Stephanie (Erik) Plagge of Mount Vernon, Andrea (Gregg) Ballou of Upper Arlington and Chris (Melissa) Dean of New Philadelphia; one stepgranddaughter, Amanda (Shane) Lucas of Centerburg; seven great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and one sister, Kathryn Morey of Gambier.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Daisy Conkle; one brother, Edwin Conkle; two sisters, Margaret Frank and Evalyn Hauger.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 1, at Zion Lutheran Church, near Jelloway, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Mark Wildermuth officiating. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the start of the funeral. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council. The Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home in Mount Vernon is handling the funeral arrangements for the Conkle family.
