FREDERICKTOWN — Nelson E. Baker, 80, of Fredericktown, passed away Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, at the Grant Medical Center in Columbus.

He was born Aug. 12, 1931, in Jerusalem, Ohio, to the late Everett and Sarah (Beck) Baker. Nelson was a member of the Knox County Horseman’s Association. He enjoyed coon and deer hunting. He was an owner, driver and trainer of Standardbred horses. Nelson played professional baseball for two years for the Philadelphia Athletics before he joined the U.S. Navy where he was a naval aviator during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Frances (Hibbitts) Baker; two sons, Todd Mizer of Fredericktown, Shan (Natalie) Mizer of Fredericktown; two grandchildren, Alyssa Mizer, Ian Mizer; and his sister, Pauline Harper of Woodsfield.

Besides his parents, Nelson was preceded in death by his sister, Rosalee Baker.

Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, where a service will be held Friday beginning at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Karl Stevens officiating. The family will observe a private burial at a later date.
