MOUNT VERNON — W. Paul Mickle, 89, of Mount Vernon, formerly of San Leandro, Calif., passed away Saturday Feb. 4, 2012, at the Ohio Eastern Star Home.

He was born Nov. 12, 1922, in Whigville, Ohio, and was the son to the late Lester Scott and Mary Frances (Danford) Mickle.

Paul was a 1941 Galena High School graduate and then attended the Ohio State University Engineering College. Paul moved to Mount Vernon in 1946 and was employed as an engineer for the Cooper Bessemer Company. In the late ’50s, he designed and built his home, complete with a putting green in the back yard. In 1976, his love of golf took him to California where he continued his engineering career with Transamerica Delaval. Throughout the years, he played in many golf leagues and won some tournaments along the way. Playing at Pebble Beach and The Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland, highlighted a satisfying golfing career that extended well past his 88th birthday.

He was a member of the Mount Zion Lodge 9 where he served as Past Master in 1965. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite and the Aladdin Shrine Temple.

Paul was very active in the Faith Lutheran Church in Castro Valley, Calif. He was a gentleman always ready to help a friend or neighbor.

Following his retirement from Delaval in 1987, Paul had leisure time to pursue various sports interests and extended travel with family and friends. Destinations included Alaska, Hawaii, the Panama Canal and several trips to Western Europe.

In May 2011, declining health necessitated his return to Mount Vernon where he became a resident of the Ohio Eastern Star Home.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Blaine Young of Mount Vernon; grandson, Scott (Meghan) Roberts of Blacklick; great-grandsons, Gavin and Mason Roberts; sister, Helen Martin of Longview, Texas; brother, Scott Mickle of Delaware, Ohio; two nieces and two nephews; and special friend Joyce Barfuss and family of California.
