FREDERICKTOWN — Flossie M. Monk, 91, of Fredericktown, passed away suddenly Saturday morning, Feb 25, 2012, at Knox Community Hospital surrounded by her loving family and special friends.
Flossie was born July 26, 1920, in Honaker, Va., daughter of Earl and Laura Elizabeth (Hess) Honaker. She married Paul Monk on Sept. 15, 1945, in Richlands, Va., during his leave from the United States Army. They moved to Mount Vernon in 1953, where he became employed and retired from Chattanooga Glass. She babysat many, many children, besides being a homemaker and baking as many as 30 pies at a time for their food concession. In their spare time, they would pursue their love of fishing almost every weekend on Lake Erie. She loved to garden and can, as well as quilting. She was a member of the Blackford Methodist Church.
Later in life, she was a popular resident of The Laurels of Mount Vernon, becoming the inspiration for Christmas at Heart, which places Christmas trees in the rooms of nursing homes throughout the county.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; a daughter, Gale Ewing; sisters, Mary Ellen Hall and Stella Jones; brothers, Claude, John, Bernie Edward “Jake” and Charlie.
She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Jeanette Thompson (Kevin Ackerman) of Fredericktown; her sister, Margo “Maggie” Hamilton of Mount Vernon; brothers, James (Ella Jane) Honaker and George Ben (Nola) Honaker, both of Virginia; a son-in-law, Sam Ewing of Fredericktown; a granddaughter, Beth (Joe) Stanley of Columbus; many nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as special adopted daughters, Roz, Deb and Frankie. She was a joy and inspiration to all she met and will be fondly remembered.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 3, at 11:30 a.m. in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Terry McLaughlin and Ruth Douglas will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Flossie’s name may be made to Hospice of Knox County, 17700 Coshocton Ave., Mount Vernon, OH 43050.
