MOUNT VERNON — Donald E. Wise, 75, of Mount Vernon, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family and close friends.
He was born June 16, 1936, in Coshocton to the late Russell and Bessie (Hart) Wise. Don graduated from Coshocton High School in 1955 and went on to Kent State university for his BA degree.
Don owned and operated Wise Jewelers for 51 years and during that time was very active in the Mount Vernon Community. He was one the founders of the Heritage Centre Association, a past president of the Knox County Chamber of Commerce, former City Council member and served on the first Board of Trustees for Knox Community Hospital and as treasurer. Don was a past president for the Mount Vernon Jaycees and was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge where he served as a trustee. He was also a lifetime member of the Mount Vernon Country Club where he had served as a past president. Don enjoyed playing golf and was a 29-year marshall and captain for the Muirfield Memorial Golf Tournament. He had served in the U.S. Army as a captain and was currently working for DeCosky dealerships as one of their drivers.
Don is survived by his true love and best friend, Marie Minor; daughters, Heather Wise (Craig Stout) of Mount Vernon, Julie (Chris) Stack of Walbridge, Lori (Michael) McNicholas of Florida; sister, Linda (Richard) White of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Annie Neipling, Ellie Stack, Asher Stout, Jake and Olivia Kight, Hanna, Emily and Ashley Kight, Michael, Matthew and Mitchell McNicholas; stepsons, Jack, Craig (Starcy) and Brian (Justine) Kight, all of Mount Vernon; two nieces, Debra (Mark) Lehman of California and Deanna (Doug) Curry of Oxford, Ohio; and five great-nieces.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lynda Wise.
Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens with military honors by the Knox County Joint Veteran’s Council.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Don’s name to Hospice of Knox County, 17700 Coshocton Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050.
