JOHNSTOWN — Velma Van Deest, 96, of South Williams Street, Johnstown, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Countryview Nursing Home in Sunbury.

She was born Feb. 14, 1916, in Glenvil, Neb. to the late Carl and Dorothy (Busboom) Walther. Velma was an active member of the Hosanna Lutheran Church in Pataskala and previously served on the Licking County MR/DD board.

She is survived by her children, Margaret (Charles) Hegenberger of Westerville, Howard (Nora Jean) Van Deest of Orlando, Fla. and Elisabeth Van Deest of Newark; nine grandchildren; many great- and great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Van Deest Sr.; a son, Karl Van Deest; a brother, the Rev. Royal Walther; two sisters, Sophia Radcliffe and Dorothy Wickham.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Hosanna Lutheran Church, 7714 Hazelton-Etna Road, Pataskala, OH 43062. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home of Mount Vernon is honored to serve the family of Velma Van Deest.

The family suggests memorial contributions in Velma’s name may be made to the church or Hospice of Central Ohio, 2269 Cherry Valley Road SE, Newark, OH 43055.
