MOUNT VERNON — Charles C. Smith, 78, of Mount Vernon, passed away May 16, 2012, at the Knox Community Hospital.
He was born Jan. 13, 1934, in Mount Vernon to the late Harry Arville and Hazel (Parks) Smith. Charles was a U.S. Marine Corps Korean War veteran and a member of the Marine Corps League. He was a life member of the Colonial City Moose Lodge, Eagles and the AMVETS Post 95 where he served as The Judge Advocate and other various positions. Charles retired from GM in 1973 and belonged to the UAW. He was a man who could fix anything and enjoyed working on automobiles. Charles will be best remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and an animal lover.
He is survived by two sons, Charles (Charlotte) Smith of Fredericktown, James Smith of Mount Vernon; one daughter, Diana (Gary) Perkins of Mount Vernon; seven grandchildren, Kevin (Elizabeth) Smith, Adam (Katie) Simones, Allan Simones, Alicia (Chris) Van Meter, Stephanie (Kevin) Roche, Charles (Carrie) Smith II, Brittany (Randy) McGregory; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Tyrone Smith and Lawson Smith, both of Mount Vernon, Robert (Pauline) Smith of California; and a sister, Wilma Glancy of Mount Vernon.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Annabelle I. Smith, in 2009; great-grandson, Nicholas Van Meter; sisters, Ruth Evener, Clara Mae Smith; and a brother, Harry Smith.
Friends may call Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home, 212 N. Main St., Mount Vernon. Funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Major Robert Bender officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow in Mound View Cemetery.
