MOUNT VERNON — Robert Eugene “Gene” Smith, 82, of East Gambier Street, Mount Vernon, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.

He was born Nov. 8, 1929, in Knox County, Ohio, to the late Harrison and Mary (Dean) Smith. Gene was a 1947 graduate of Gambier High School where he played on the basketball team. On March 13, 1948, Gene married the love of his life, Eva (Shannon) Smith, whom he met at Jewells Dairy in Mount Vernon. He retired in 1982 after 35 years of employment with Continental Can Co. in Mount Vernon.

He played in the men’s softball league, numerous bowling leagues at Chargers Lane and was an avid hunter. Gene coached Little League Baseball at Lamb Park in Mount Vernon, and served as a youth director for the Friendship Methodist Church. He was a member of the First Church of God (Anderson, Ind.). Gene was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his children, Diana (Terry) VanHouten of Howard, Linda George of Mount Vernon, Bonita Smith of Reynoldsburg and Susan Vernon of Mansfield; six grandchildren, Angela Starr, Amanda Lucas, Jessica Franklin, Casey Turner, Hannah Newton and Jeremiah Vernon; 14 great-grandchildren, a great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Mary McPherson and Margaret Schorr, both of Mount Vernon.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Eva (Shannon) Smith; a grandson, Craig VanHouten; two brothers, Edward Senseman and Marion Smith; and a son-in-law, Lance Vernon.

Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the First Church of God (Anderson, Ind.), 10 Pine St., Mount Vernon, OH 43050. Pastor William Fulda will be officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
