MOUNT VERNON — Ezekiel “Ray” Johnson Jr., 89, of Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2012, surrounded by family and close friend Angele at Knox Community Hospital.
He was born Nov. 8, 1922, in Swandale, W.Va., to the late Ezekiel Ray Johnson Sr. and Ethel (Hughes) Johnson. Ray was a World War II Air Force veteran, a member of the First Church of God and a former member of the Salvation Army Church. He retired from Cooper-Bessemer after 40 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Louise Marie (Cline) Johnson; daughters, Linda (Gary) Stanley and Johanna (Paul) Cline, both of Danville, and Diana (Ron) Peck of Mount Vernon; sons, Eric Bywaters, Robert (Linda) Bywaters and Joe Bywaters, all of Mount Vernon; sister, Corene (Fred) Waller of Bassett, Va.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; close friend, Angele Aune of Fredericktown.
Ray was preceded in death by two sons, Ernie and Glen Johnson; his first wife, Betty; second wife, Nettie; and several brothers and sisters. A special thanks for the care and compassion given to Ray by Barb Blubaugh.
Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home, 212 N. Main St., Mount Vernon, and one hour prior to services on Thursday. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Bill Fulda officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
