CENTERBURG — John R. (J.R.) Hankins, 82, of Centerburg, died Sunday afternoon July 1, 2012 in the Palliative Care Unit at MT. Carmel East Hospital, Columbus.
He was born on Sept. 15, 1929 in Tazewell County, VA., to the late John Ezra and Drucilla (Whitt) Hankins. He was a member of the Fargo Wesleyan Church and retired from PPG after 30 years of service. He was also retired from Carter Lumber Company in Fredericktown after 25 years. He was a 1947 graduate of Sparta High School and lettered in basketball.
John enjoyed sports, especially basketball and there were times when he would be watching a game on TV and listening to one on the radio. John was a jack-of-ali-trades, always willing to lend a hand or give advice. Being a natural born carpenter, he was very popular on the front desk at Carter’s. People would say, “I’ll wait for John.” He also liked tinkering with his tractor and restoring old lawn mowers. John’s work ethic was instilled in his sons and grandchildren. John’s greatest joy was spending time with his family
He is survived by his wife of 62 years: Darlyene (Powell) Hankins and they were married December 18, 1949 in Bloomfield; sons: John Robert (Retta) Hankins of Marengo, Christopher Allen Hankins of Centerburg , grandchildren; Todd (Sharon), Chad (Amber), Kanaan (Liz Dotrong); great-grandchildren; Taylor, Garison, Gavin; brothers: Hermes (Sarah) Hankins of Centerburg.
Preceded in death by sisters: Ruby Brewster, Grey Brummitt. Sadie Addison, Gerthel Linkous.
Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR 3 at 61 where services will be held Friday, 11 a.m. with Pastor Brian Feathers officiating. Interment will follow in the Bloomfield Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at Mount Carmel East Hospital.
