MOUNT VERNON Robert R. Swetland, 69, Fredericktown, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2012, at his home. He was born No. 9, 1942, in Mount Vernon, to the late Ralph and Catherine (Lewis) Swetland. He was a 1960 graduate of Sparta High School, where he was a basketball standout playing varsity for four years. Robert farmed the family homestead which has been in his family since 1815. He was very proud of the heritage of the farm and considered it an honor to continue the family tradition. He was a member of the Colonial City Moose and Eagles in Mount Vernon. Robert attended the Sparta United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Massey-Harris-Ferguson Club of Ohio at which he served as trustee for over 12 years. He was also a member of the Massey Collector Association, the Friends of Massey Club, and the Morrow County Tractor Club. Robert was a member of a lot of different boards throughout his lifetime. He sold Pioneer Seed for over 20 years. But most of all he loved raising his family and farming the family homestead. He is survived by is wife of nearly 50 years, Esther (Johnston) Swetland; his daughter, Donna (Tracy) Roy of Afton, Okla.; two sons, Randall (Beth) Swetland of Sparta, Todd (Sondra) Swetland of Sparta; seven grandchildren, Luke (Rebecca) Swetland, who served as caretakers for their grandfather for the past two years, Johnathan Swetland, Carissa Swetland, Zachery Roy, Celia Swetland, Adriane Swetland, Jett Swetland; and his great-grandson, Matthew Swetland. A graveside service was held today beginning at 11 a.m. in the Blomfield Cemetery near Sparta. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home is honored to have been chosen to serve the family of Robert R. Swetland.
