John was born Jan. 26, 1936, in Mount Vernon to Reil Butler and Martha (Frye) Butler Stull. He was a graduate of Mount Vernon High School and was employed 44 years at Cooper-Bessemer, Cooper Energy Services and Rolls-Royce in Mount Vernon. John had spent his lifetime in the Mount Vernon area, was a member of the Hopewell United Methodist Church, the Kokosing Valley Antique Tractor Club and the Dixie Model A Ford Club.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara (Smith) Butler; children, Greg (Julie) Butler of Columbus, Dave (Mary Beth) Butler of Mount Vernon, Pamela (Jeffrey) Shafer of Mount Vernon and Jessica (Adam) Hartney of Cuyahoga Falls; grandchildren, Mattie Butler, Kyle Watkins and Katherine Watkins; great-grandson, Ben Watkins; his sister, Louzella (Douglas) Long of Utica; stepbrother, Rex (Joanne) Stull of Butler; sisters-in-law, Kathryn Smith and Sandy (Tom) Williams; brothers-in-law, George Smith and Ralph (Anne) Smith; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by his stepfather, Harold Stull.
Friends may call Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Michael Padula officiating. Burial will follow at Hopewell Cemetery.
