BELLVILLE — Edward L. Hartley, 71, of Bellville, passed away Saturday afternoon, Aug. 11, 2012, in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a sudden illness. He was born March 15, 1941, in Perry County, the son of William and Martha Idella (Gaddis) Hartley and was graduated from Norton High School.

On Aug. 8, 1964, he married Pamela J. Clarke, a British sweetheart whom he met while she was in the U.S. pursuing a career in horticulture. Having just celebrated their anniversary this past week, together they shared 48 years.

Ed and Pam settled in the Bellville area in the early 1980’s coming from England where the couple lived for 12 years. Farming his rural Bellville farm for over 30 years, Ed truly did what he loved and loved what he did. He enjoyed tending to his cattle and horses, working in the fields, most of all delivering hay to his many customers. He enjoyed watching his horses in local fair harness races. Recently he adopted a new hobby, making cider. Edward attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellville.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela J. Hartley of Bellville; daughter and son-in-law, Julia Jane and Allen Radke of Plymouth, MicH.; son and daughter-in-law, Will and Michelle Hartley of Bellville; four grandchildren; Emma and Amanda Radke, and Grant and Darren Hartley; two sisters, Joyce McCork of Dalton, and Sally (John) Michaels of Wadsworth; a brother, Bill (Bonnie) Hartley of Wadsworth; nieces; nephews; and extended family.

In addition to his parents, Edward was preceded in death by a son, John Hartley in 1996; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bob McCork; and John and Diana Clarke.

Friends may call Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church, 48 Church Street, Bellville, where the funeral service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. The Rev. Doug Pretorius will officiate. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. in New Lexington Cemetery, New Lexington.

Memorial contributions to the Jefferson Township-Bellville Rescue Squad may be made at the church.
