MOUNT VERNON — Ruth P. Bates, 92, of Mount Vernon, passed away Thursday morning, Aug. 30, 2012, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born June 11, 1920, in Killbuck. Ruth was a faithful member of Beulah United Methodist Church near Mount Vernon. In her earlier years, Ruth was an avid bowler and volunteered with the New Hope School in Mount Vernon.

Ruth is survived by her sons, Henry Bates of Mount Vernon, Gary (Ruth) Bates of Fairfield and Thomas (Gloria) Bates of Houston, Texas; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by her mother, Rebecca Gray Hern; her stepfather, Arch Hern; her husband, Clarence Bates, in 1985; sons, Bobby Bates and Clarence “Fred” Bates Jr.; and a grandson, Fred Bates.

The family will receive friends from noon until the time of a funeral service at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon. Pastor Thom Fowler will officiate. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice of Knox County, 17700 Coshocton Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050; or Visiting Nurses Association of Mid-Ohio, 105 N. Main St., Mansfield, OH 44902.
