MOUNT VERNON — Evelyn “Jane” (Irvine) Rice, 89, of Mount Vernon, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.

Jane was born Nov. 20, 1922, in Mount Vernon, to Robert P. and Verna C. (Halsey) Irvine and had spent most of her lifetime in Knox County. She was a graduate of Mount Vernon High School and the Mount Vernon Business College. Jane enjoyed shopping, traveling, and bingo. She was an avid reader and cherished the time she spent with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Gay Street United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon and in the past had been active with the church guild.

Surviving are her daughters, Pamela (Victor) Conkle and Deborah (David) Howard, both of Mount Vernon; eight grandchildren, Joshua (Joanie) Conkle, Tyler (Miranda) Conkle, Erin Conkle, Tracey (Ron) Ahue, Jennifer (Stephen) Archibald, Bryanne (Ryan) Duffin, Melissa (Bob) Stoneking II and Cathy (Seth) Gehring; 13 great-grandchildren, Alice, Jack, Sam, Dillon, Ryker, Taylor, Gabe, Natalie, Rose, Hezeki, Evelin, Gavin and Max; and a special niece and nephew, Wendy Reed and Dan Irvine.

Besides her parents, Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Tyrus Rice; brother, R. Wendell Irvine; and great-grandson, Griffin Conkle.

Friends may call Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St. Mount Vernon, where funeral services will follow at 11 a.m., with Roger Doty officiating. Burial will follow at Workman Cemetery in Danville.
