MOUNT VERNON — Vaughn C. Rice, 90, of Mount Vernon, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at his residence

Vaughn was born March 21, 1922, in Bladensburg to Lee and Rosalie (Cummins) Rice and graduated from Thornville High School. Vaughn served with the U.S. Army in Italy during World War II, participated in Operation Riva Ridge at Mancinello Ridge, and received commendations for his efforts in that battle. Always the worker, Vaughn retired three times. First from Cooper Industries in Mount Vernon, then Hydraulic Press Manufacturing in Mount Gilead, and finally from the First-Knox National Bank in Mount Vernon.

He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Mount Vernon and attended the First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon. Ever the worker, Vaughn could not be still. He was always doing either physically or mentally, never a quiet moment.

Surviving are his son, John C. (Sandra) Rice of Ottawa Lake, Mich.; daughters, Carole A. Rice (Bill) Senft of Mount Vernon and Esther P. (John) Adkins of Westerville; grandchildren, Stephanie (Jesse) Olrich, John T.W. Rice, John C. Rummel, Jay (Stacy) Adkins and Nicholas A. Argentiero; great-grandchildren, Jordan Rummel, Ashleigh Rummel, Andrew Adkins, Alex Adkins, Emma Grace Olrich, Jack Wyatt Olrich, and a one on the way; his granddaughter-in-law, Melinda Rummel; his sister, Esther Allen of Newark; his in-home caregivers, Sandra Wilhite and Bonnie Bittinger; and his canine companion, Freddy.

Besides his parents, Vaughn was preceded in death by his stepfather, Clarence C. Toothman; and his wife, Ethel L. Rice.

Friends may call Thursday from 5 To 7 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon. Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Frank Carl officiating. Burial, with military honors by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow in Mound View Cemetery.
