ASHLAND — Dr. Stanton Parry, 87, an educator, died Sept. 17, 2012, at the Kingston Nursing Center in Ashland, and previously resided in Mount Vernon.
Dr. Parry was born in Granville, N.Y., the son of Amos and Luella Parry. He obtained an undergraduate degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and both a master’s and Ph.D. degree in economics from Michigan State University.
While at Cornell, he was inspired by a guest lecturer, Dr. Elton Trueblood, author, speaker, and teacher of philosophy and religion, and began his search for Christ. Dr. Parry later accepted Christ as his Savior, committed his life to following Him, and felt called to serve Him in Christian higher education. He was an assistant professor of business and economics at Bethany Nazarene College in Bethany, Okla. He gained experience as a professor at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn., before serving as chair of the Business and Economics Department and later academic dean at Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville, Tenn. He came to Mount Vernon Nazarene College in 1974 and served as Vice President of Finance and Management until his retirement in 1990.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Loraine Parry of Mount Vernon; son, David (Pam) Parry of Glenwood, Md.; daughter, Teresa (Gordon) Swain of Ashland; five grandchildren; brother, Don Parry of Kansas City, Kan.; sister, Barbara Leonard of Glens Falls, N.Y.; and cousin, Gladys Parry of Granville, N.Y..
Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene, 807 Coshocton Ave., Mount Vernon. A service will be held Friday at the church, beginning at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Jack Christner officiating. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Vernon Nazarene University through the funeral home.
