MOUNT VERNON — Richard M. Sweeney, 71, of Mount Vernon died Tuesday evening Oct. 23, 2012, at Laurels of Mount Vernon.
He was born Aug. 5, 1941, in Troy, N.Y. to the late Thomas B. and Margaret (Roach) Sweeney.
Richard had worked as the Chief Engineer at the Channel 6 television station. He had proudly served in the U.S. Navy. Richard was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church in Danville where he was active with the Knights of Columbus. He was a track and cross-country coach at Centerburg, New Albany, Worthington and Circleville Schools. Richard enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping and fishing. His pride and joy was his 100 plus rose bushes that he tended with loving care.
In 1965, Richard married the former Carole M. Heath and she survives in Mt. Vernon.
He is also survived by his children; Brenda (Jeff) Sweeney-Moss, Molly (Jerry) Sweeney-Strider, Heather (Craig) Sweeney-Knotts and Sean (Andrea) Sweeney; brother, Tom (Terri) Sweeney; two sisters, Kay Sweeney and Jane Sweeney; and nine grandchildren, Josh, Jessica, Jason, Brad, Jamie, Brent, Toni Lin, Marrisa and Ainsley.
Friends may call Sunday Oct. 28, at Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home, 212 N. Main Street, Mount Vernon from 1 to 3 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 3 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be observed Monday Oct. 29, at St. Luke Catholic Church, 307 S. Market St., Danville, OH. at 11 a.m. with Father Victor R. Wesolowski officiating. The burial will take place in the Saint Luke Cemetery.
