MOUNT VERNON — Doris Mae Johnson, 81, of Crooked Street, Mount Vernon, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at Country Court Nursing Center in Mount Vernon, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on July 9, 1931, in Swandale, W.Va., to the late Howard and Ivy (Taylor) McCune. Doris previously worked at Blands and Zolmans restaurants before becoming a caregiver at Rose Garden Nursing Home, Ohio Eastern Star Home and privately with in-home care.
Doris was well known in her family as having a “green thumb” and often nursed her family’s plants back to life. She enjoyed bowling, gardening, traveling and, most important, spending time with her children and grandchildren in their daily activities. Doris was commonly referred to as the “Mayor of Crooked Street.”
She is survived by her children, Deloris (Jerry) Franz of Mount Vernon, Barbara (John) Streby of Fredericktown, Leon (Delores) Johnson of Fredericktown, Sue (John Kennard) Lamb of Howard, Leonard Johnson of Mount Vernon and Faith (Mark) Dulaney of Howard; her grandchildren, Stacy (Kelly Frost) Franz, Todd (Angie) Bell, Tammie (Levi) Ridgway, Keith Johnson, Jennifer (Jason) Hambleton, Helèna (Travis) Parks, Annesia (KC “Marc” Wang) Lamb, Clarissa Lamb, Joanna (Patrick) Bailey, Janelle Wade and Sonya Dulaney; great-grandchildren, Kennedey, Averey and Charlie Bell, Reagahn and Reese Parks, Nolan and Ellis Ridgway, Morgan and Lily Hambleton, Isaiah, Isaac, Hannah and Josiah Bailey, Dylan and Andon Wade; special children, Jim and Lori Epley; canine companion, Daisy Mae; two brothers, Earl (Erma) McCune of Clay, W.Va., Charlie (Melanie) McCune of Lorain, Ohio; and a sister, Janet (William) Canfield of Duck, W.Va.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Johnson; seven brothers and sisters, Garnett McCune, Keith McCune, Lucille Sattler, Evelyn Estridge, Iris Backus, Harold McCune, Geneva Gill; and canine companion, Booboo.
Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, where a funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m., with Pastor Patrick Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
