MOUNT VERNON — Dr. Robert Lee Westerheide, 78, of Mount Vernon, died suddenly but peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at his home in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

He was born in Minster, Ohio, on June 21, 1934, to the late Henry A. and Mildred (Froning) Westerheide. Bob was a 1952 graduate of New Bremen High School in New Bremen, Ohio. He graduated from The University of Dayton in 1956 with a degree in Pre-Medicine. Bob received a Masters of Medical Science Degree, as well as his Medical Degree from St. Louis University College of Medicine, class of 1959. While there, he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Bob completed his general surgery residency in 1965 at The Ohio State University under the renowned surgeon, Dr. Robert Zollinger M.D. In 1966, he completed his fellowship in surgical oncology at the prestigious M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

After completing his training, Bob was recruited by the late Dr. John Drake to come to Mount Vernon, to begin his surgical practice. Bob practiced general surgery and oncology in Mount Vernon, for 35 years, from 1966 to 2001. During his career, Bob remained very active in the field of cancer treatment and research and was a member of the American Cancer Society-Ohio Chapter, eventually serving one year as president. Bob was also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and also a member of the American Medical Association.

He was also very involved in the Mount Vernon community. Bob was an active member of Rotary. He was an Eagle Scout and served as Troop Committee Chairman for Boy Scout Troop 332 for many years. He also served on the Mental Health Board. Bob was proud to be a member of the Knox Community Hospital Board during the planning, financing and construction of the new Hospital.

Bob was a lifelong member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, where he served as a Lay Distributor of Communion for many years. Bob was a 3rd Degree member and Past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus, Council 847, Mount Vernon; and 4th Degree member of the Father Lamy Assembly 2790, Danville/Mount Vernon. Also in his spare time he enjoyed traveling, camping, boating, investing and attending family gatherings.

Bob is survived by his wife of 52 years, Loretta (Severt), whom he married June 25, 1960; children, Ronald (Jennifer) Westerheide, Michael (Shari) Westerheide, Edward (Jennifer) Westerheide, Linda (Mark) Musgrave, Kenneth (Kristine) Westerheide, Sharon (Marcus) Mathieu and Betty Westerheide; grandchildren, Matthew (Mallory) Westerheide, Therese Westerheide, Marie (Jaime) Aleman, Angela Westerheide, Monica Westerheide, Elizabeth Westerheide, Nicholas Musgrave, Andrew Musgrave, Katherine Musgrave, Jackson Westerheide, Lauren Westerheide, Connor Westerheide, Joseph Westerheide, Ashley Westerheide, Bryanna Mathieu, Sabrina Mathieu, Julian Mathieu; great-grandchild, Micah Westerheide; his only brother, Dr. Donald E. (Joan) Westerheide Ph.D.; and numerous other family members, including nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one son, James R. Westerheide.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 303 E. High St., Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050, with the Rev. Father Mark J. Hammond as Celebrant. The family will receive friends today from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
